That would be an interesting selection for a custom station.

This thread's getting tough to navigate without the "next unread post" feature working correctly. It takes six clicks to get to the last page of this thread, then you gotta remember the last post you read.

We've gotten so used to ekeefe keeping things running smoothly over on xm411, that every other forum (there's other forums?) seems clunky and unmaintained.

That "next unread post" thing is annoying.

Re: XM Defections to Slacker

Postby KISSman on Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:58 pm

I called tonight to finally cancel my XM account after being a member since July of 2004. As a new Slacker, I felt that Slacker had all of my musical interests well-covered and I'd just be left to have to figure out how to replace the talk radio that I really do like (and would miss) about XM.

So I call up telling them that I don't like the recent programming changes to the music stations due to the merger and that I cannot get my XM talk radio stations if I went with Sirius' a la carte option. They then offered me a $9.99 a month plan ($120/year) which I still declined. Then they come up with the $77 for a year option to keep me in the fold. After several minutes of 'ummmms' and 'uhhhhhs', I caved -- damnit!! :oops2:

I figure that even though the music channels aren't as good (which is a nice way of saying they now suck), I still get to keep my talk radio along with everything else for less than $7 a month. I feel dirty for having kept it, but I didn't expect them to throw me a soft-ball of a deal like that. Oh well... another year with that crummy outfit. :(

I'm still happy to have my Slacker though. I don't have XM in the car and now use Slacker all the time while driving. Plus, I'd much rather listen to my custom stations than anything XM has to offer musically.

Anyhow, just passing my experience along in case another Slacker user wants to try and keep their XM but at a lower rate by telling them how their service blows since the merger. No promises, though. I was sincere about quitting and maybe that's what got me the deal.

Don't feel bad. From what I'm reading on some of the other satrad forums, XM isn't giving too many deals anymore, so you should feel lucky. I called yesterday to cancel one of three radios and didn't get any retention pitches. It could be that I canceled because they promised me 3 free months when I called in December, only to have them charge me anyway. After 3 calls and no fix, I gave up. The 2nd radio goes when the annual contract expires later this year (mainly because of the price increase).

There will probably be less deals because they got $500 million from Liberty which will help them out short term AND I also read that the May and December debt payments SXM owed have been moved to 2010. So in other words SiriusXM has breathing room now, they have no debt payments for about a year.

The urgency is over, for now.

For fans of XM 72 Beyond Jazz, Slacker has recently launched Modern Jazz. Give it a listen and tell us what you think. We'll have a forum for this station soon.

Found Slacker a couple of weeks ago when somebody on another forum mentioned it. I hadn't heard of it before then (though I've tried many of the other Net radio sites). I'm totally hooked, and picked up my G2 player yesterday. I sill can't quite pull the trigger and dump XM entirely just yet, however. I still like listening to some of the channels on my long commute, and still like the variety of sports talk, and some other things about it. Where I live, I can barely pick up the local sports chatter (which blows), and once in a while ESPN Radio isn't totally fuzzy. So XM still gives me five sports talk channels vs zero to listen to in the car. So I'll hang with XM for a bit longer.

Still, Slacker has made it a lot easier on me to let my sat radio go when the time comes. I'm definitely finding more new music through Slacker - like I used to find a lot in the early days of XM.

Hello All,

I'm another XM user who became disenchanted after the merger. After searching several message boards, I found Slacker. After Sirius took over and left me out in the cold, I feel like I'm home again. I've been fine tuning a few stations on the web player, and will be ordering my G2 very very soon.

What a contrast! After months of frowning, rolling my eyes, cursing, and then finally just mourning the downfall of XM, I now have something to look forward to each time I sit down at my pc, and soon, every time I get behind the wheel.

Thanks, Slacker, for giving me back the music I love.

I received a G1 from the Woot sale a few days ago. The intention was to use it to replace XM. However, this thing locks up so much that it is totally worthless and unpractical to use in a real world. I have sent in a problem report and hopefully they will be able to take care of it. It refuses to download everything. It is currently locked up and silent while attempting to listen to one of my stations (Alternative). So much promise, so little delivered. :(
