Vocal Trance

Postby tom1l21 on Thu Aug 27, 2009 5:46 pm

I know this isn't really that much of a suggestion since the Trance channel encompasses both "vocal trance" and regular "trance", but I tend to get really bored with trance songs that in fact do not have vocals. I hate having to either skip or ban a non-vocal trance song. Is it possible to get this included? FWIW, shoutcasts most popular techno channel is vocal trance and you can verify this by going to shoutcast and checking the top stations.

Thanks!

Hey Tom --

Thanks for the feedback. This was actually my biggest concern in creating the Trance station, and I continue to look at the balance of underground, instrumental trance and vocal, pop trance very closely, and check on listener feedback as much as I can. Some listeners, like yourself, are interested in vocals, while others just want the epic instrumental stuff. When programming the station, I keep the biggest hits in high rotation, but also try to be as inclusive as possible, and then the listeners can ban, customize, or skip as they see fit.

We already have a "Club Hits" channel that might be closer to what you're looking for, although I do see the difference. Is it worth it to split Trance into "Vocal Trance" and "Instrumental Trance"? I'm not sure -- I'd like to hear what other listeners have to say about it. Head on over to the Trance forums and let us know your thoughts.

Thanks again for posting your feedback and I hope you continue to listen and let us know what you think!

Ben, thank you for the quick and detailed reply. As of now, if you have been responsible for what gets played on the "trance" channel, I commend your efforts as it has been excellent for sure.

As I said earlier, I''m not sure how much of an indicator this is, but shoutcast has "vocal trance" and "non-vocal trance" with 1850 and 1600 current live listeners respectively. In terms of the top most listened channels, they are ranked approximately 8 and 11, again respectively. This tells me that there seems to be a significant divide in the listeners of both these genre's. Again, this is shoutcast, but it has been around for a long time and I think it gives a relatively good estimate on what people are tuned into in terms of popularity.

I don't know if I'm going out on a limb, but I don't think that the ones who listen to trance are the "casual listeners" that you might find with a "top 40's" station so I don't think there would be too much outcry against it as they might understand there is a difference in taste with/without vocals.

P.S. If you could get some of the tracks from the old DJ Doboy Vocal Mix editions, that would be huge!!! And more OceanLab!!! thanks again Ben!

Hello,

Thought I would add to this suggestion instead of just making a new thread. I would really like an instrumental trance station. I like to listen to streaming radio stations when I work, but I find vocals distracting. So if there was a distinction between the two trance stations, that would be awesome.

I also would suggest including instrumental progressive music in the instrumental trance station OR having a separate progressive music channel. Trance and progressive are similar, but whereas trance is more melodic, progressive is less so.

Thanks for all the awesome work you do.
