Upgrading to iOS 4

Postby g4s on Mon Jun 21, 2010 7:05 am

It's supposed to come out today. Hopefully it won't break Slacker 2.0. Has anyone heard anything?

I'm guessing it'll probably be OK except for maybe some multitasking changes that may need an upgrade from Slacker.

We'll see what happens.

Chat support just told me that the app will need to be updated in order to be compatible with iOS4.

Thanks. I won't be upgrading then.

I had run Slacker 2.0 on a beta version of iOS 4 with mixed results. For the most part, the app ran just fine, just like it did on iOS 3.x, but since it was a beta version of iOS 4, I did experience some unexpected terminations of the app. As far as I could tell though, those don't appear to have been the fault of the app, and it's possible that since it was a beta version of iOS 4, there may have been memory leaks elsewhere that caused the app to force close (the crash logs reported "Low Memory", not anything specific to the Slacker app). I haven't since had the opportunity to update my iPhone to the iOS 4 release seed to give it another chance with the supposedly final OS version.

Do note, however, that the current Slacker app does not multitask under iOS 4, so if you do upgrade, don't expect it to run in the background. Hopefully the update to support multitasking is under development and will be submitted soon!

I would expect the app to continue running just like it does under iOS 3, without multitasking, but your mileage may vary...

I upgraded to iOS4 a couple of hours ago, and it seems to run fine on my 3GS, sans the multitasking.

Slacker is my preferred music app (I'm a paid subscriber). But I also have the Pandora app and I have to say that being able to multitask Pandora on the iPhone is pretty sweet. Almost as sweet is being able to use the universal audio controller with it.

I know this board is gonna get inundated with requests for the Slacker app to support iOS 4. I hope it's not a long wait.

Same issues here. Sometimes it would run all day long, others for no longer than maybe 1 or 2 songs, then crash back to the home screen. It started around Beta 2, and still existed with the Gold Master of iOS4, which is the same build as what is available today for the launch.

Hope they push the update out soon. (Pandora's is already live. and it's pretty fantastic to have it running in the background)

I have been running iOS4 for about a week and have noticed a few crashes of the latest Slacker app. I would say it happens after several hours of listening and unfortunately I haven't noticed any pattern to the cause of the crash. Unless you can't tolerate 1-2 crashes per day (assuming hours of listening) I think the new features of iOS 4 outweigh the occasional crash.

Agreed, slacker needs an update to support multitasking ASAP or I think they'll start losing market share to Pandora.

... With all of the problems Slackers had lately with their website distributing virus's to users computers (see general forum) I've been contemplating a switch to Pandora anyway. That fact, coupled with the fact that I can multi task on my iPhone with Pandora is probably enough to push me over the edge.

We did submit a iOS 4.0 app update to Apple ahead of their suggested date in order to be included on Launch day. Sadly, it appears we are still in "Review" as of today. We are hopeful that Apple will approve the update soon though.

The iOS4 update RESET my cached stations so I had to refresh them all over again, as if it were the first refresh, which means about 2 hours or so. I'm on a 3G still, so multitasking isn't an issue. But I'll be jumping on an iPhone 4 at the first opportunity. And is there an iPad app in our future?

We, the other iPad owners that use Slacker, are hoping so! But let's hope that the iOS 4 update to the iPhone app gets approved in a timely manner so they can get to work on iPad support!

I blame Steve Jobs. (just kidding)

Thanks for letting us know RomeE. Hopefully they get this pushed through sooner than later - got a road trip this weekend that's gonna be pretty rough without Slacker.

I upgraded to 4 yesterday and my Slacker only plays 1 or 2 songs and then crashes back to the home screen. This is happens every time.

I also cannot get past a song or two without the app crashing.

And some songs stutter.

One crash was so bad, my iPod completely froze up and I had to do a hard reset.

I hope this isn't the norm after I plunked down $50 for the year.

I'm also having issues on my iPod touch 2G with iOS4. After 1 or 2 songs, either from cached or normal stations, the app crashes. I also had to do a hard reset one time because the crash was so bad. I'll wait a bit longer for a Slacker update before moving on to a different music app because the station caching is worth it if it can get fixed.

We anticipate our iOS4 compatible app to be approved shortly. We've already submitted it to Apple, and believe that should resolve any issues you have running the non iOS4 app on iOS4.
