New Firmware 1.6.89 released

Postby RomeE on Tue Dec 23, 2008 6:08 pm

Hi guys,
There is some new firmware for the G1 portable radio players.

To get the update, please make sure that you have more than 50% battery charge (recommend that you fully charge your player before doing this). Refresh your stations as you normally would and then after the stations are refreshed, it will download the firmware update.

Once the refresh is completed, power off the player by moving the power switch down and letting go. It will say shutting down, and power down, then restart and performt he firmware update.

If your firmware update does not start, please plug your G1 into power and let the battery charge more. It will not initiate at all if the battery is less than 50% full.

Fixed the stuttering that some people reported as songs start.
Fixed the problems reported with Radio Plus subscriptions when used with the G1.
Fixed some stations not syncing to the G1 players properly.
Made other Misc bug fixes.

As always, if you have any problems, please let us know.

I would suggest that if you experience problems, please perform a Factory Reset and refresh your player again.

Best regards,
Rome E

haha you got your christmas wish walkonatyclb! Good to see Slacker is keeping the G1 alive and well...which is especially important for all the Woot-sale G1 buyers!

This is great news because the 2 I purchased from Woot was concerning me. Especially since I already gave one of them and his one and only complaint was the stuttering as it was playing each song. Now with this update hopefully he will be totally happy. I will contact him in the morning to make sure he refreshes his and downloads the update.

Can't wait to check out the update! Thank You.

Any word on if I'll be hearing the Eagles, etc. on my G1? Will this update fix that?

Edit: Just did the update, and I skipped through a bunch of stations quickly. I then refreshed and every station I played was updated (and some I didn't play), which seems to indicate a change in how things have worked in the past. The song skipping problem seems gone, though the stations now take a smidge longer to "tune to" initially. But on the whole the interface is smoother and seems more natural in operation and less "stuttery" (is that a word?) than before so it's a good trade-off. So far, so good. If this fixes all the bugs I'm gonna regret not picking up a few of those Woots for family and friends.....

UPDATE: Woo Hoo! Beastie Boys, Eagles, Metallica, etc. on my G1! Thank You Thank You Thank You!
I didn't try a Zeppelin station but I'm guessing with this update the G1 and G2 are equal as far as artists! Christmas came early!

EDIT: The mighty Zeppelin is on my G1!!!! First song played on Zeppelin radio was Ramble On, one of favorites. Long live Slacker!

EDIT: The mighty Zeppelin is no longer on my G1!
Yes, that's right. As someone pointed out, apparently only custom stations are now playing the previously missing artists. I checked, and yup - Led Zeppelin radio was no longer playing Led Zeppelin on my portable. Fantastic.

In addition, after a few weeks of the smoothest operation my G1 has ever had (which got me to buy the Premium case and re-sub to Plus service) - my unit is now doing the "refresh a few stations" and freeze thing.

My friend tried the BlackBerry app and for some reason cannot add or edit artists properly on his custom stations. He tried Mozilla and IE, and updated his Flash too. I was like, "Welcome to Slacker". He said it's a great concept but apparently they need all of their programmers fired.

I've had the G1 for 6 months and other than the previous few weeks it's been a stuttering, slow-responding hunk of s**t for most of the time. I'd really just like my money back at this point as I somehow don't believe this thing is ever going to function right and shouldn't have been sold to the public to begin with.

Thanks Slacker! Everything is working well so far!!!

There really is a Santa Claus!

If I knew then what I know now, I would have picked up a second G1 on Woot! the other day.

Oh well, live and learn.

Great news that those artists now play on the G1. You see? Slacker DOES care about its customers. ;)

Thanks again Slacker, I'll be breaking out my G1 again and putting it back in action in combination with my G2. Maybe I'll wrap it up and give it to a family member for Christmas lol

I am also happy to report that a bunch of new artists are playing on my G1 since the new firmware. Most of these bands are somewhat obscure hard rock / heavy metal bands but they never played on my G1 before the new firmware. I requested a lot of songs by a lot of artists and they never seemed to play on the G1. Immediately after I loaded the new firmware, all of those requested songs started playing!!! Thanks Slacker!

I realized right away when 90's Rock played a Kid Rock song that I had never heard Kid Rock on my G1 before, so there's probably a bunch of stuff we'll see popping up.

I am really glad that the stuttering issue is fixed.

Anyone have a complete list of artists that are now playable? Thanks.

Re: New Firmware 1.6.89 released

I have now spent a few hours listening after the new firmware update, and the G1 is like a completely different device. I counted roughly 15-20 artists / songs that didn't play before the firmware update that I had previously requested. Every one of them played today.

I have a custom channel with about 200 artists and before the firmware update it seemed like the G1 would only play about 100 of them. After the firmware update, the channel is much deeper in content. I was already hooked on Slacker, but this sealed the deal. This is exactly what a music nut like me has always wanted.

Awesome update! No stuttering since the update, which is awesome. We've had my G1 set up playing Christmas music all morning and I think I even noticed some new artists on the Christmas station. Very cool. :-)

It's really good to see a company continue to support a discontinued product. Long live Slacker!
