Love the Oldies channel, BUT...

Love the Oldies channel, BUT...

Postby tvtech on Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:43 am

I listen to the channel a lot because I usually want more variety than I get from a decades type channel. This channel is a terrific way to get my oldies fix.

However, every now and then there are some very lame tracks played. I really want to hear the original recordings that I remember from radio back in the day, not some alternate or newly recorded versions. Neil Diamond chanting (because he really can't sing anymore) Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon from some recent live concert instead of the 1967 recording just doesn't cut it for me. This happens a lot and I wind up banning some otherwise great music because of it. I don't remember all of the "wrong" tracks that I've heard but I can start making a list if anyone from Slacker is interested.

Not sure I understand - if you ban a lousy track like the one you mentioned, how are you banning great music?

The label data we receive is, at times, messy and sometimes a live track is associated with a non-live album. This is difficult for us to catch, especially because it can happen after the fact.

If you let us know the specific artist/track/album, we'll work to get them fixed.

Thanks for your concern.

Scott Riggs! Can you help us Classical music lovers out? (It's "oldies", in a way ...)

In the "Cmon Slacker, we need real classical music!" thread, it was stated that Slacker was working on a new, non-light, non-hits classical music station. For real? Is it going to happen? Help a brother out.

It IS going to happen. It's just taking much longer than we had hoped.

That being said, we are still working on it and hope to have something out soon.

Thanks for your incredible patience.

I'm thinking that if I ban the title and artist then if the orginal ever shows up I'll never hear it. (I'm just using Neil Diamond as an example.)

Nah, I don't think so ... my guess is that Slacker at least is aware of the album also, and probably uses some other kind of identifier for the song. I hope so. ;)

Scott, I'm very surprised that someone from Slacker is responding so quickly. That is refreshing. I'll try to pay attention and let you know which tracks are in question.

Thanks for the answer.

On a Genre-based station programmed by our Music Directors, that is correct because they hand pick each song (and version) that is played on a station. So, you don't want to ban a song unless you don't like the song, not necessarily the version.

If you don't like the version let us know and we'll make sure it's correct.

On a single Artist station or Custom station, you can let us know and we'll check the data to make sure it's playing the correct version. But, more than one version could be included so banning isn't necessarily a bad thing on those types of stations.

I really like the oldies station on slacker but add more 50's and early 60's to it's playlist.
