I certainly hope that the exclusivity agreements are lucrative enough to substantiate the user base & subscriptions Slacker is *not* going to receive due to such a decision.

I for one, will never go to a dingleberry. I hate the interface, I hate the applications, and I hate the phone. However, I would happily upgrade to my subscription should the caching be supported on the iPhone.

Good luck!

I thought it was Apple that didn't allow this feature as well (we were led to believe this SOMEWHERE).... I am very disappointed today (as a very happy G1) fan to not only see the G2 going away with no G3 in sight -- and now what appears to be no caching of songs on the WinMo (what I have) and Android (what I want) systems.... I hope you guys are getting a lot of money in that exclusive deal with RIM -- cause I feel it will/is costing you a lot in other avenues.

Overall, I am just sick of all this exclusive offers. All they do is stifle competition. (It is so bad in the cellular industry that there is threat of gov't action)....

Okay I am off my soapbox....

/First satellite radio went to * and now I am scared for the future of my newer (music) best friend...

The point is that caching is one of the features that significantly sets Slacker apart from other streaming music services. I'm really hoping that the company agrees.

We do agree completely. But also as a business decision, sometimes we need to partner up with people. One of these opportunity presented itself when we were able to work very closely with RIM to develop the Slacker Application. Due to this, RIM wanted an exclusive for the BlackBerry devices because they were wanting to move into the Consumer Smart Phone market, and they felt that this was a great application (Slacker) and a great feature that they could offer to their customers.

Thanks,

It was demonstrated at CES last week, and should be coming to the App store sometime this year. Slacker will also be updating the Android app to support caching as well.

Would this be the first app that Apple allows to cache music? The only app of which I'm aware that does anything close to this is Pocket Tunes, and it only records streams in real time.

Spotify (non-US) has been allowed, and I thought I heard that Rhapsody has some form of offline or cached listening as well (don't know for certain, as I haven't looked at their app and its features)...

I just Googled; Rhapsody doesn't currently cache but according to an employee, "it's on the radar."

So it looks like Slacker might be the first US app to test these waters...

I have a feeling that if AT&T has any hands in the US app store, Slacker will have to make the refresh process WiFi only. AT&T's already got enough problems with their network in some areas, the last thing they want is an app with the potential to download ~100MB worth of data just to cache one new station.
