i've had a combination of all the problems reported in several threads in this forum happen to my 4gb g1 player. first it won't finish the station updates and just freeze. after a reboot, the player will play but freeze after some time. then the player will get stuck on starting up. after several of these cycles, the player started up without any of my stations but with my library still intact. after doing a 'factory reset', the player got stuck again on station update, then the cycle repeats.
just got through with slacker live chat support. they sent me the cert file via e-mail with instructions on how to do it. although it look pretty straight forward, the actual process might be a bit touchy. i went through several tries and the recovery process will just hang. charles b suggested that i reboot and try again.
was finally successful after several reboots but only after making sure that the recovery process is the only one running in my pc (less than a month old lenovo desktop with core 2 duo and 2gb ram running xp pro on a T1 line). the final combination that worked was
1. unplug the g1 from the usb port,
2. reboot the pc,
3. stop all software from running,
4. start slacker software player (its actually working now),
5. login (if you're not automatically logged in),
6. re-start the recovery process on your g1 (push and hold i/o button down, press [+] when screen goes blank, push i/o button up to lock, press [-] to start recovery)
7. plug g1 into usb port of pc (you might have to wait until the pc recognizes your device)
8. click <OK> on the dialog box that pops up in the slacker software player (see #7)
9. you will know the recovery is happening when the dialog box tells you that:
i. its getting your player serial number
ii. its erasing all your stations
iii. its downloading the firmware update
iv. its extracting the firmware
v. its applying the firmware
and so on and so forth (i might have missed something but each step shows the % of completion.
if the message in the dialog box is not changing then that means the process is stuck and you have to try again.
am in the processes of syncing my g1 again and its taking quite some time, so maybe this message is premature. will post again after all is done.
