Let me tell you that the G2 is a lot more stable than the G1. I've not had a single issue with my 4GB G2 with like 12 stations loaded onto it and daily refreshes. Two firmware updates have been released since I got it, and both installed with no issues and fixed more minor, isolated issues that I hadn't experienced anyway, in addition to giving some additional settings/features.

I'm expecting my G1 to arrive this week, but I think I'll be waiting for a permanent fix for all these issues to be available before I start using it in my vehicle (got it for the touch strip, rather than the wheel navigation of the G2).

I've been using my G1 in the car (and other places) for over a month and the only thing I don't use on it is the touch strip. It's too sensitive. I've found that in the car I can change stations, etc, using the wheel without looking at it. You'd never be able to do that with the touch strip

I can't get the emailed "fix" to run. I can't get anyone at Slacker to respond to my emailed requests for help. I can't use my Slacker and it's been a week now. *?

i've had a combination of all the problems reported in several threads in this forum happen to my 4gb g1 player. first it won't finish the station updates and just freeze. after a reboot, the player will play but freeze after some time. then the player will get stuck on starting up. after several of these cycles, the player started up without any of my stations but with my library still intact. after doing a 'factory reset', the player got stuck again on station update, then the cycle repeats.

just got through with slacker live chat support. they sent me the cert file via e-mail with instructions on how to do it. although it look pretty straight forward, the actual process might be a bit touchy. i went through several tries and the recovery process will just hang. charles b suggested that i reboot and try again.

was finally successful after several reboots but only after making sure that the recovery process is the only one running in my pc (less than a month old lenovo desktop with core 2 duo and 2gb ram running xp pro on a T1 line). the final combination that worked was
1. unplug the g1 from the usb port,
2. reboot the pc,
3. stop all software from running,
4. start slacker software player (its actually working now),
5. login (if you're not automatically logged in),
6. re-start the recovery process on your g1 (push and hold i/o button down, press [+] when screen goes blank, push i/o button up to lock, press [-] to start recovery)
7. plug g1 into usb port of pc (you might have to wait until the pc recognizes your device)
8. click <OK> on the dialog box that pops up in the slacker software player (see #7)
9. you will know the recovery is happening when the dialog box tells you that:
i. its getting your player serial number
ii. its erasing all your stations
iii. its downloading the firmware update
iv. its extracting the firmware
v. its applying the firmware
and so on and so forth (i might have missed something but each step shows the % of completion.

if the message in the dialog box is not changing then that means the process is stuck and you have to try again.

am in the processes of syncing my g1 again and its taking quite some time, so maybe this message is premature. will post again after all is done.

Going on Day 4 of no Slacker G1 functionality. Guys, I know you are all out having fun at CES, but this issue must be resolved. It's absolutely frustrating and the silence is deafening.

Someone please help. I work from 7am to 7pm EST, so please contact through my email. I've already send support a message and haven't heard anything...

Haha, we aren't at CES. (At least not the support staff).
I'll look through the emails, but we have pretty much answered alot of the emails from this last weekend. So, maybe we didn't get your email? Or maybe it's one of the ones that we didn't quite get cleared out today (but we hope to be pretty much caught up after the holidays by tomorrow or wednesday).

We have been trying to get to everyone as quickly as possible, but it IS a little slower than normal because of the Holiday Season. More people got G1 and G2 players on Dec 25th than any other single day 8*).

I know this isn't a good excuse, but it's simply the truth. We have been working very hard to answer each and every email that we get, and if we haven't gotten to you yet, we will.

Thanks,

Rome,
Since youre on, I just want to ask, is there any reason why I cant just return this bunk one and get a different one, and hope for better chances? Im being honest when I say I AM NOT computer savvy enough to follow, or care to follow, the reboot, turn off pc, make sure all processes are off etc. etc. etc. I love this slacker, I got three of them for my daughters, but one has been out of commission for about 5 days. Not a great Christmas present. I havent had an email back (i emailed Saturday, expected I would hear back today) and honestly Im afraid to even see what the email is going to consist of. I dont want to sound lazy, but really, I didnt get these things to add one more thing to my plate of things to do.
This was a Woot purchase.

as an update on my earlier post. after the re-flash procedure, my g1 took more than 3 hrs to refresh 8 of my 15 stations via usb (there was no wireless connection at my place of work).

so, i unplugged the unit and took it home. i was able to listen to the refreshed stations on the way home. started the wireless sync when i got home and that took another 3 hrs to refresh all my stations. today everything seems to be working fine since i started using it 4 hrs ago.

My daughter's G1 had the startup issue yesterday, but I went through online support, had an email containing the updated certificate within minutes, followed the directions, and had her up and running without issue in no time.

Yep it's a little frustrating to have an issue with the player, but the support here has been great, in my opinion.

Try contacting them through the online support. It only took a few minutes to get a response. And then it was no time until I had everything I needed to get my daughter's G1 up and running again. Much faster than waiting on email.

OK here are some cleaned up instructions for resetting your slacker (your STILL going to need the file they send you as its CUSTOM to you)

they will send you a 20090107.p12 file or something very similar.

first thing you need to do is CLICK the file. one of two things will happen. either your OK and a Import Certificate Wizard will appear (just hit next and ok to everything change nothing)

When that is done NOW you will be able to flash your player.

IF THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN if when you click P12 you get a browser for program to open this file with your going to have some trouble.

The Slacker certificate is not a slacker certificate its a microsoft formatted certificate. IE it depends on certain files and programs being on your computer that are NOT from slacker. if you do not get the import wizard you do not have these files.

I believe these files are part of internet explorer. Not sure what version. I tend to "disable" explorer and remove any MS components that are dangerous or I do not need. I have no idea precisely which one Slakcer needs

basically these 2 files should reside in your system32 folder

cryptext.dll and crypnet.dll if they are NOT there this process will not work. take that P12 file onto other computers and click it till you get the import certificate wizard. when you find a PC where that happens THAT'S the pc you need to do your flash from.

Now install the slacker software if its not already installed. make sure your logged in.

Make sure you have enough CHARGE on your slacker in in doubt plug it in for 30 minutes to charge up some. Once you start your sync you can plug in the charger. (I would avoid using the USB cable in a PC to charge as I am not sure what plugging into a computer will do to this process probably nothing but I can not say with certainty)

Now hold down the power button till the screen goes black and quickly press and hold VOLUME UP and slide the power switch into the lock position.

Once you see a YELLOW bar at the bottom of the screen you can release all buttons but LEAVE the lock switch locked.

Once its up to the recovery screen plug in the USB cable to both the slacker and the PC

now press vol down. if it has not already done so windows will begin installing drivers for this process when its done the slacker software will present you with a ready to recover screen.

click OK and it should begin the process by erasing your slacker.

It will then download firmware unpack the firmware and then install the firmware. the entire process took me only a few minutes it was surprisingly fast.

once its booted back up do a SYNC since there is now nothing on the player.

at this time plug in the AC power cord since an interrupted sync is thought might lead to this kind of problem so you don't want that battery dying during sync and its going to be an INITIAL sync so for most people a very long sync.

That's it. So far so good my player is still syncing its probably going to take well over an hour.

I just hope it either goes away or slacker comes out with a more permenent fix if his does not do it.

apparently some of us got a slightly corrupted firmware update and for some it went splat right away and for some it took a few days. IF this is the case a clean firmware install "should" solve the problem permanently.

Fingers Crossed. So far it has only affected 2 of my 7 slackers. the others appear to be ok so far.

where can i get these files?

cryptext.dll and crypnet.dll

Those are Windows XP files. Install Windows and the files will be there. If you removed components from Windows or hacked your system, they may be missing.

I have now setup 4 of the Slacker G1's and I've not had one single solitary problem. I initially charged them first before I did anything else, because these babies have been sitting for a while. The next thing while waiting on them to charge was to put the portable ID in my secondary Slacker account. Once the battery is fully charged, I have one station refresh it then download the software. Once I do a hard shut down it installs. It then reboots and I then test it out by playing several songs. Once I do that, I select the channels I want and via wifi I let it download them. YES the download takes a heck of a long time initially. I mean I heck of a long time, but it is the same way on the G2, which I also own.

I've given 3 of these G1's away, two during Christmas and the owners reported to me at staffing (they are co workers) that they have not had any problems.

One belongs to my son who has also not reported any problems.

They all refresh via Wifi though, so that is the common denominator between them.

I understand this thread is about finding solutions for those that do have problems, but just wanted to show that not all these units have problems. I also think many of the issues are related to routers and crappy computers. Just my opinion!

I took your advice and I received my G2 4gig today and it is loading my stations as I type this. I hope that I am not just a glutton for punishment but I took the plunge. I like the design of the G2 a lot. It must be at least half the size of the G1. I hope that I do not have the problems with it that I had with my G1. Also thanks to the Slacker who posted the 15% Dell discount on the forums. I took advantage of that coupon. Wish me luck Slackers. I love the whole Slacker concept and hope to enjoy many hours of music. My 11 year old daughter will most likely get my G1 handed down. She will likely load it full of The Jonas Brothers. :rules:
