G1 Stuck on Starting up????

Postby RomeE on Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:53 am

Hi Everyone,
If you have a G1 Portable Player that is stuck on Starting Up, then please contact us via our Live Chat at http://www.slacker.com/support/. We currently believe we have a work around (A true fix is going to require a little more time), and we would like to assist everyone in getting their players running again.

Because there is a little more to this than the normal recovery process, we would like to assist you via chat to make sure that it goes smoothly, and provide you with all the necessary steps needed to make it work.

Best regards,
Rome E

Sounds great -- will the chat be available after normal working hours? Or do I need to bring my rebooting G1 to work tomorrow?

If it's going to be after 5pm PST, please send us an email, and we'll reply with instructions.

I wouldn't get too charged up about this "fix."

My roomate's been trying it on his G1 for about an hour now, and it appears to have done nothing but hang his machine indefinitely.

As with so-many-things-Slacker, this appears to be another case of "not ready for prime-time."

Has your roommate contacted us?

Everyone that has contacted us has gone through the process with no problems. You have to get some additional information from us, so if he's trying it on his own, it's not going to work. This is why I posted to contact us via Live Chat so that we can get it working properly.

Yep he got the certificate from Charles and followed the directions to the letter.

We're both about to give up on these things.

Have him contact us via Chat. I've had yet to not have one work. Everyone that has contacted us via chat that I know of has been able to get it running in 5 minutes or less.

I know this sounds strange, but mine "hung" up twice as well. Instead of hitting the "-" sign first, I plugged the player into the usb port first, and then hit the "-" sign. Went smoothly after I did that.

it's been running solid since I was helped, and is great thus far. As good as I thought it would be. Thanks for the solution, I no longer regret the purchase!

My roommate is clearly a stupid douche. The one piece of the puzzle he was missing for the reflash was leaving the power button in "keylock" position. Once he did the update with the keys locked, everything worked fine.

The unit is still resisting being refreshed by USB, but seems to be working fine with wireless refresh.

Let's hope this can be the end of the ugliness and we can all start loving Slacker the way we had originally hoped we would.

Can anyone post how to do this on this thread? I still haven't gotten a reply to my email sent last night and I work 12 hour days, it could be weeks before I can live chat...

try sending another e-mail...they need to send you a file that you install on your pc. After that it's the same reflash procedure as always.

Despite being very popular, e-mail is not very reliable. It is too easy for e-mails to be misdirected or caught by a SPAM filter. When someone does not respond to an e-mail, you don't know if they are ignoring you or if they never got the e-mail.

I suggest that you PM (private message) RomeE through the forum. You may have better luck that way if your e-mails are not getting through.

Honestly the best thing to do is send an email to support@slacker.com.
This is the holidays so we are a little backed up on emails, but we are trying to get through them all asap.

Sending me a PM is not going to be helpful, because I need to get contact information, and setup some things that if you emailed support, I would have all that information already, and it would save time.

I would anticipate that anyone that emails us about this today should have a reply by tomorrow.

Send me a PM with your email address. As of last night at midnight when I went to bed, I thought I had filtered through all of the emails and got all of the G1 stuck emails replied to.

To FrankS.....I chatted with you last nite.....doing the refresh on the desktop rather than the brand new laptop worked like a champ! I suspect it may have more to do with wireless vs. wired than laptop vs. desktop.

Do we have any idea what is causing this, and why it's affecting some and not others....?

Just like any technology, things can go wrong a small percentage of times.

We test the heck out of these things, but sometimes you guys experience things we have never seen with the devices. I use 2 G1's and 1 G2 almost constantly at work, and I very rarely have any problems with them under normal use, and prior to any update we test the new firmware on dozens of players for many days/weeks prior to release, but again, 1 or 2% of the time, it doesn't go as planned. This is kinda the way technology can work at times.

I wish you guys would just post the darned direction with file etc..

I will NOT easily be available for live chat unless its available at hours such as now (I work nights)

I sent an e-mail almost 2 days ago just sent another one since it must have gotten lost the first time (that happens with e-mail thankfully not often)

Just get a webpost with directions and download please.

I emailed support a few minutes ago.

Boy, this has not been my my day to use music players.

I own a Zune 30, which made headlines on December 31 when every last one of the devices bricked due to a leap year issue. Microsoft posted a fix for that, which involves allowing the battery to drain, waiting until after noon GMT (7AM EST) on 1/1/09 when the clock will reset itself, and recharging the battery.

This leaves me without a Zune for the better part of a day. So tonight, when I went to turn on the Slacker G1, I got stuck in a "Starting up..." infinite loop. Arrrrgggh... :-x

Here's hoping that both my devices will be working ASAP. Dratted music-player gremlins. ;)
