FAQ's, Tips, and Tricks -- Software and Web Player

Both -- Where can I find my Custom Station?

All stations you create or edit and "Save As..." will show up under a folder call Custom Stations on the Left hand side of the Player. This area is called the Station Tree, and you can click the "+" sign next to any folder and expand that Genre Folder.

The web player is what you see when you go http://www.slacker.com The software player is program that runs on Windows. The software player is discontinued.

Just type the artist you want to add in the white field under the Request Music tab. When you press Enter or Go, the artist will be at the top of the list on the right. Click on the heart next to the artist name to add the artist to your station.

To delete an artist, click on the heart next to the artist name and the artist will be removed when you save the station.

Thanks PG. I see the part about deleting an artist now. There is another problem. "Artist on this station" does not display all the artist that I have selected although they ARE playing. Also there are artist playing that do not show up on "Artist on this station" and I also did not select them. I don't even like them. Do you suppose there is a glich with the new web player?

If your station is playing artists that you did not select, check to see if Artist Discovery is set to Off in the Fine Tune tab when customizing a station.

Another reason that there may be undesired artists playing is if you have too few artists in your station. Slacker requires that there be a minimum of 15 artists per station. Sometimes, not all selected artists are licensed to play by Slacker. In that case, Slacker will pick related artists.

I know their are limits to the amount of songs you can favorite when using the free service, but I just haven't been able to figure out what those limits are. I was able to favorite a certain number of songs all at once and then I haven't been able to since then. I was just wondering if you can only favorite a certain number of songs over time or if there's a total number of songs you can favorite.

Thanks,
Nathan

You can request 20 songs with the free account, but as the music plays on any of your stations, you can favorite an unlimited amount of songs but only in real-time.

When I tried Alt + Left Arrow in the Web Player, nothing seemed to happen. Then, after a few tries, the Web Player stopped playing, announced that unusual activity had been detected, and made me sign on again with my username and password. Even then, the Web Player would not play - I had to close and restart it.

What does work for me is:

Alt + Right Arrow = Skip to next song

So my suggestion is:

DO NOT USE: Alt + Left Arrow in the Web Player unless you just want to experiment with it.

For the life of me, I cannot reboot my BRAND NEW G2... I just opened the box last night, refreshed all my stations, and it was working this AM, but now it is stuck on the Slacker Radio Picture and will not shut down or even show as hardware on my PC when it is plugged in.. I am incredibly frustrated... for someone who considers themselves technically sound, this is very difficult to understand.. How is there NO reset button the unit? I have held down the play/pause button for well over a minute to no avail...
Anyone with help or ideas I would be greatly appreciative!

If I open up "Indie Hits" and fine tune it to the point of my liking, then "Save As" my own station, will it still receive the updated tracks and playlists that the Indie Hits DJ submits?

Station Refreshing?

Postby Saxman_83201 on Sat Oct 03, 2009 8:17 pm

If i make changes in Custom Stations on my puter that have been sent to my portable, like editing dj choice or even adding artists, will those changes be reflected when the G2 refreshes or do i have to delete the original custom station and reload with changed selections? Begs the question where DOES the refresh come from?

Yes, they will be reflected on your G2. HOWEVER.... depending on how often you listen to the station you made changes to, it may take a couple of refreshes (or a lot of listening) before you start hearing the changes.

The queueing on the Slacker portables is a first-in, first-out order. So If you were to refresh your player, then make a change to the station and refresh again without listening to anything, you would have to get through all the music on your portable from the full refresh before you'll start noticing the changes you made.

If you want to realize those changes immediately, the best way for that is to delete the station from the portable, refresh (so that it actually gets removed from the portable), and re-add it to the portable. This will reload the station completely, based on the new station settings. There is something you lose if you delete and re-add, though... if you had been listening to the station for a lot of time, and the station had increased its stored song count as a result, this will be re-set to 100 songs when the station is re-added to the portable.

Thank you MikeV! Great information...Does slacker put this sort of info in print anwhere? Your answer brings new questions to mind...how does song count increase and how high will it go? I spose it depends on the number of stations on the portable...I have the 4 GB unit which i love but, of course, would like to maximize song numbers. Also...slacker advises me that if the library is left unused by personal selections from puter the G2 gradually realizes this and uses that space to add songs during refreshing. What is your take on this? Oh, one more thing, is there any place you can actually see what songs are on the portable unit?-- Not the library which i understand how to do, but the stations themselves? Thanks for the excellent informaton!

Song count increases based on available storage, as well as how often you listen to a station and for how long. The song count can go up to 500 songs, 5x the initial 100 song load.

I was not aware that the personal library space was usable by stations. Nothing Slacker has posted in the past here indicated that to me. It's possible that they may have changed something in a firmware update to allow this, though. If they told you it does this, then I'd say that it does.

And a song list of what's on the portable is not possible. I'm sure they load their portable similar to how the Blackberry gets loaded, and there is no way to determine what songs have been loaded onto the device, or what stations which files are linked to. Their file and folder names are all numeric, and I believe the files are encrypted on top of that, so they can't be read with any regular media player.

Did i read in one of your handbooks that if you do NOT fill the library of the G2 with personal mp3s that the unit will detect this and use this space for radio refresh download space? i dont really need the mp3s i have stored there since all i listen to is the radio downloads and i am thinking of deleting them if the G2 would use the space

Response (Frank S.) 10/05/2009 03:10 PM
The Portable will detect the sapce not used if you do not load the maximum number of stations that the Portable can hold. The Portable will then use that extra space to make the stations you do load larger.
Auto-Response
Slackers response to my question on the matter...Incidentally, do you see an advantage in the 8 GB G2 Mike...it seems a bit like buying a LARGE soda pop at a fast food restaurant that has a machine for free refills...i want one nonetheless...:)... but what is the real advantage of the 8GB? Thanks, Mike! Very Helpful stuff!
