Custom Comedy Stations?

Postby Jim1348 on Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:59 am

Both my wife and I have had Slacker for a while now. but I really haven't taken the time to use any custom stations, either of my own creation or others. Are their any custom comedy stations available right now? Is there any sort of master list of custom stations that are available to share? If not, maybe I will try and create one sometime.

You can try looking through this forum... that would be the closest thing to a "master" list, as those are the stations people have made that they want to share with the rest of the community.

Not sure if anyone has gone through and made their own comedy station or not...

Custom Comedy Stations?

Postby Jim1348 on Mon Aug 03, 2009 6:48 pm

I finally got around to creating two custom comedy stations. I had at least 15 different artist on each and I think the 15 from the first custom comedy station are different than the 15 from the second comedy station. My question now is what are the pros and cons of one vs. two custom stations? I assume there is a finite amount of material available and I would prefer that neither plays the same artists. Since I have 15 artist on each and they are different, is still possible that both stations will play some of the same material? Am I better off adding more than 15 artists per station? If so, is there a maximum number of artists per station?

Jim1348, depending on how you have the artist discovery and popularity Fine Tuning settings set, they could play similar comedians. Unless the comedy styles of the two stations vary greatly, to a point that the people you have selected on one station couldn't possibly be considered similar to the people on the other, they will likely overlap even just a tiny bit.

Custom comedy stations are tricky because tastes are so heavily personal in what you think is funny. But here's one for you: http://slacker.com/r/H8z4

This is "classic" comedy, up to just before the "modern era" that I date from Richard Pryor. That means it is heavily slanted towards Jewish comedians and humor. Almost entirely clean (every once in a while, they slip in a later period Jackie Mason routine with some vulgarities). Artists include:
Abbott & Costello, Nichols & May, Jackie Mason, Mel Brooks, Bob Hope, Woody Allen, Robert Klein, Victor Borge, Jack Benny, Bob Newhart.

There are also a few more modern comedians who work clean and in a similar vein, such as Martin Mull and Flip Wilson.

You might want to add back in Alan Sherman and Shelley Berman. I got tired of hearing their stuff, which I liked as a kid, but not as much now.
